Workshops and Presentations

January 25,2007, Dallas,TX: “The Insanity of the First Drink: a Psychotherapist’s View.” NOVA 2007: The Annual Update on Addictions – Dallas, TX “TAAP” Conference original 90-minute talk given for first time.

Notes:Seemed very well-received by an audience of about 50, several of whom indicated interest in the Dallas workshop in June. Had a chance to trot out my “DSM Wannabe’s” and talk about the mental health implications.

May 5, 2007, Bellevue CC, Bellevue, WA: “Motivation for Maintenance, Developing Discrepancy from Moments of Relapse” One-day version focused mostly on the discrepancies of “wishful thinking” as we had only one day. 25 students actively participated, many of whom are already out in the field. Have been doing this for Larry Lombard (Instructor) for years, and always have a blast. Did get to use the decision tree, especially the left-hand trunk.

May 7, 2007, Anchorage, AK: “Motivation for Maintenance, Developing Discrepancy from Moments of Relapse” Alaska Annual School, Anchorage. Workshop fit right in with the conference theme of “Recovery: Creating and Sustaining Change.”

Notes: Did a condensed version, as I had only two hours, but 52 motivated souls showed up for this Monday morning workshop. It was great to be back in Anchorage, third time at this conference. Saw old friends like Vacharee Howard and Janet Carter and made some new ones, like Tony Dekker from Phoenix Indian Medical Center. A real bonus was a day in the workshop on “Mindfulness: Building Cognitive Skills and Abilities to Sustain Behavior Changes” with Robert Lane, PhD of Alaska Human Services.

June 1, 2007, Bellevue, WA: “The Motivation for Maintenence Decision Tree.” The 20th Annual Northwest Conference on Behavioral Health and Addictive Disorders.” Bellevue Hilton, Bellevue, WA.

Notes: At least my third time at this conference, first one presenting the “Decision Tree,” which emerged from discussion at the workshop in Dallas last June. The “decision tree” traces the clinical path from assessment to intervention to discrepancy to menu of tasks for maintenance. At any given moment, the therapist can know where we are in the process, and which set of options is most relevant.
